Matt 16:25 "For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it. [NASB] Luke 18:29-30 So He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life."

On Saturday we drove to Living Way Foursquare Church in Highlands Ranch, a suburb of Denver, where we attended a regional training event for the Gateway District of Foursquare Churches.
The training was attended by over 100 district pastors and leaders. We enjoyed our time together renewing relationships and making some new friends.

In the late afternoon we began a drive from Highlands Ranch, through Denver, and then northeast towards North Platte, Nebraska. Throughout the drive we drove through intense snow squalls and as darkness fell the road began to be icy. In many places the center of the driving lane had pieces of ice and chunks of frozen snow, which we assumed had fallen off the numerous tractor trailers which travel interstate 80 in Nebraska. Late in the evening as we were about 12 miles outside of North Platte, and following a truck we hit a large chunk of ice. Because of the snow, and icy rain we decided to drive on into North Platte and assess any damage there.
Once we arrived in the city, we pulled over, checked the car (a rental) and saw that a large portion of the front bumper was broken. What to do? We choose to drive on to our final destination, but as we were driving though the city the car began to make noises and we smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from under the car! We called our friend, Pastor Dave Holland, with whom we would be staying and then called roadside service with the rental agency. They asked us to drive the car to our final destination and they would then make arrangements to provide us with a new car. When we finally got to the home of Dave and Jonie Holland we were tired and stressed.
The next morning we were the guest speakers at The Lighthouse Foursquare Church. We had a wonderful morning sharing about our ministry in Russia and Michael preached a message about “The Man with the Withered Hand.” The Lighthouse Church has been partnering with us in our work in Russia for 4 years. We always enjoy visiting this congregation. We spent the rest of the day and all morning on Monday sharing the things that the Lord had done in our lives, with Pastor Dave and Jonie.

In the early afternoon we began our drive back to Lakewood, CO arriving without any problems in the early evening.
We will be in the Denver area for the next nine days. Most of our time in the area is family time with our oldest daughter Jessica and her family. As I write this we are preparing to have lunch with Karen's older brother John and his wife Susan. On Saturday evening we will be speaking at The Gathering Place, a Foursquare church in Commerce City, CO. This church is pastor by Brian and Denise Coleman. The following day we will have a dinner with Leonie Kent and Lorrie Drennen, both of whom are missions advocates in the Gateway district.

A short video of our work in Russia!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13568420.post-32323222635988735592012-07-10T19:24:00.001+04:002012-07-10T19:24:40.772+04:00A Most Unusual Day The day started with an early morning phone call from a friend in crisis. Her cat was dying. Could I bring my cat carrier and help her take it to the vet? I was awake earlier than normal enjoying the quiet and my coffee, but I quickly got dressed and went to her. All I could really do for my friend was be there and offer her my support and so I spent the morning sitting in the waiting room of a vet clinic.

Because city traffic and parking is impossible I had taken the electric tram to my friend’s house. Coming home I had to walk 2 blocks from the the tram stop to my home. It was sunny and hot. The cat had survived. I was feeling good about the day. I actually was feeling the presence of the Holy Spirit very strongly in an affirming presence upon me. I was totally unfocussed on my surroundings because I was enjoying the nearness of the Lord.

A block from my apartment building I hear a young woman’s voice say, “Karen? (pause) Is that you?” With some effort I had to pull myself back into the present and as I glanced about I saw a familiar face which for a moment I couldn’t identify. Then, I knew her! Nadia, whom I hadn’t seen in years was standing before me, smiling. We hugged each other on the street with joy and abandon.

She told me she lived not far away and another young woman I knew was caring for her daughter, did I have time to see them? We walked back to the bus/tram stop and waited for Ira to bring Nadia’s little daughter. As we waited Nadia told me some of what she was doing with her life. She is now married with a 2 year old daughter. She is a house group leader with 11 woman that she is mentoring; some as new born believers, and some she is raising up to be leaders like herself.

Nadia also told me something that brought tears to both of our eyes. She thanked me for bringing Jesus into her life so many years ago. I first met Nadia when she was 7 years old, in 1994. Her big sister had become a believer in another city and then, when Michael and I moved to the city where her family lived, Nadia and her mom both became believers within a few months. They have been followers of Christ ever since.

In 1995 Ira, then 9 years old, was our neighbor who lived across the alley in the next building. We had an outdoor youth Bible study in the summertime and Ira’s mom used to sneak in close and hide where she could listen without being seen. She was hungry to know who this God was that we were teaching about. It wasn’t long before she became a believer in the Christ who died for her as well, and she has raised her children to know God.

Nadia told me that she has been thinking about us a great deal lately and has been wanting to see us and personally thank us for introducing her to Jesus. There is no doubt that it was the Lord who caused our paths to cross. Nadia was walking back from an appointment at a health clinic which happened to be on the street where we lived. I had no reason to be on the street walking home except that I had been called out to help another friend.

When Ira arrived with the baby we walked back to our home to spend some time together drinking tea and catching up on the years. When I met these girls they were 7 and 9 years old. Today they are young women of God living lives to serve and please Him. The kicker came when it was time to go, when without prompting, they asked if they could pray for me! They had noticed me limping a bit from my bad hip and wanted to anoint me with oil and pray for healing. Talk about ministry coming full circle. It was powerful!
Lena was one of many children and teens who spent their time in our home, hanging around us and our teen-age children when we lived in Dzerzhinsk, Russia from July 1994- February 1996. Indeed half of our small church was made up of children and teens.

Russia was tumultuous during those years. The former Soviet Union had collapsed, the economy was in a shambles, and the older generation did not know what to think or believe anymore. Many families fell apart under the stress of those years. Russia's already high alcoholism rate jumped even higher as many men lost their jobs or worked for months without being paid. As a result of these stresses many young people were growing up in homes that provided less than optimal care for them. We attracted these kids because we had beautiful daughters and a cool American son with a video game machine, and because we provided a small semblance of normalcy and/or acceptance for them. We feed them, loved them, disciplined them at times and showed them another way of life. Our home provided a temporary refuge for many of these young kids. For us it was often chaotic and noisy, but we (usually) loved having a houseful of kids around.

Just yesterday, Lena gave us these four photographs from those years. In the photo above is our oldest daughter Jessica with three of the girls who came to our home and to our church.

The smallest and youngest girl in the photo above would often visit us on her own. It has been so many years since we have seen her that we have forgotten her name. We think it was Nadia. She would come by our apartment after school and ring the bell. When we opened the door she would just be standing there, never say much, but just come on in. She often just sat quietly on the sofa or in a chair. If our old Commodore 128 computer was free she would play a game. Late in the evening often as late as 10:00 PM she would leave for home, almost always by herself. We never met her parents and we had no idea what her home-life was like. She always had an aura of sadness about her. I am guessing that if we had offered her a home, she would have just moved in with us and her parents would never had said anything.

I have thought of her often over the years. She would be about 25 now. Is she alive? Is she OK? Did she fall into the trap of drug abuse which so many kids in that generation succumbed to? Unfortunately when we were forced to leave Russia we left her behind as well as dozens of kids whose lives we had touched and had brought some joy into.

I look back on those years with bittersweet memories. I am happy that we did what we did, but in many ways I wish that we could have done more. I struggle against anger when I think about being forced to leave by our mission board who said we had "lost our vision" because we were more interested in people as individuals than in church politics. We made many mistakes during those years, but one thing we did right was to love people as people. The response has been good, so far, for this small church. We have averaged 25 people per evening and several people have told us how they are enjoying the sessions. This coming weekend we will teach 3 more times.

Marriage ministry is a real need in Russia. The country has one of the highest divorce rates in the world, and sadly, the church is not much different. Families have few good models of a peaceful, God honoring family life. We feel privileged to teach these sessions and are asking the Spirit of God to touch lives and cause people to live as real disciples as they claim to follow Him.

The Advertisement for the Seminar

The first two evenings we were in a hall that was very cold and uncomfortable.

The last evening we moved to a smaller hall were it was a bit warmer.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13568420.post-50374513825716238862012-02-05T11:40:00.007+04:002012-02-23T00:02:02.241+04:00Love, Sadness, Joy, Heartbreak, Questions
Last evening we were teaching a marriage seminar in the city of Dzerzhinsk. This is the city that our family lived in from mid 1994 - early 1996. During that time we met many people and made many friends.

One time, while Karen and I had taken a trip by train to Moscow, a little girl knocked on our apartment door, and asked our teenaged children if she could stay overnight. She lived with her grandfather, who was often drunk and would lock her out. Her mother was off drinking in the village, and her father had disappeared years before. The kids said yes, so she stayed.

We arrived home very early in the morning, getting to our apartment about 6:00 AM and were surprised to see this little urchin sleeping on our sofa. At breakfast the kids told us the story how she had been locked out of her home and had no place to sleep. Lena stayed with us most of that day and late in the evening it became clear that she wanted to stay overnight again. What to do?

We decided to let her, not knowing where this would lead. One night stretched into a week and then longer. Her family, whom we had never met, didn't seem to miss her. We began to buy clothing for her and she just became a part of our family and the pack of young people who hung out at our home.

That fall we received a visit from the local school authorities. They told us that they were aware that we had this young girl living with us and they wanted to know what our intentions were. We told them that because she apparently needed a home we were simply providing for her. They then asked us if we were taking responsibility for her and would we provide for her needs. We thought that was obvious since we were already doing so. We were told that since Lena had begun living with us she had become markedly happier and a better student. They then asked if we would possibly be interested in adopting this young girl. We said we would be open to the idea.

As the weeks stretched into months we came to consider Lena as a part of our family. She began to call us Momma and Papa. She was happy and adjusting well even though the structure of our family cramped her independence somewhat. Up until the time she came to live with us she had pretty much grown up on the street.

During that time we contacted our mission board (different from the one we serve with now). They gave us permission to pursue adoption, but then within two months under a change of leadership they reversed the decision! We were told, "You were not sent to Russia to adopt children, but to preach the Gospel." We were told that we had lost our vision and purpose. After going back and forth for several weeks we were told that they were withdrawing their support and we were told we must return to America!

During the time that this was happening the local officials were trying to have Lena freed legally for adoption but it was at this point a family member intervened and said no. They were not opposed to Lena living with us (especially since we provided for all her needs), but they opposed the adoption.

As time began to run out we could see that we would indeed be forced to return to America and that we would not be able to keep Lena. It was heartbreaking for us. The time came when we had to tell this little girl that we were leaving, and that she could not come with us! She would have to return to a terrible home situation, possible abuse and no care at all. The injustice of the situation was terrible for us to bear and knowing we had to abandon this young child whom we had come to love was like ripping our hearts out of our chests. How do you tell a child who loves you and trusts you, "We are leaving. We can take the cat and dog, but you have to stay behind."

Returning home we lost touch with Lena because of the chaos in Russia during those years and the lack of internet and other forms of communication. We wondered what her fate would be. We did not imagine that it would be good. We hoped she would stay in the church, but we knew the chances were not good.

Five years later in 2001 we were able to make a trip to visit Russia. During that trip we saw Lena. She was now 18 and a young mother. She had gotten pregnant and married her boyfriend, a young man who had been in and out of prison several times. It was both a happy and sad reunion. Lena was her same outward self, happy and funny. Inside however we could see the sadness in her life. We all knew that the past was behind us and things were different. We were not her parents, and we were there only for a short time. The time together was awkward at best. We returned home, happy to have seen Lena, but not happy with the way things turned out.

In 2004 we returned to Russia to live and within a short time Lena made contact with us. She was now separated from her husband and a struggling young single mother. Her friends were not a good influence. We spent the day together, but it was awkward once again.
We lost track of her completely over the next few years. We knew she lived in Dzerzhinsk, but our lives were on different tracks. We worried that like many young Russian people, she would end up addicted to drugs and suffer the consequences.

Yesterday, while I was teaching, she came into the hall and sat down next to Karen. I was so focused upon my teaching that I saw her but didn't recognize this smiling young woman sitting next to my wife. At the conclusion of my presentation, as I was walking to my seat I realized, "It's Lena!"

We hugged and kissed and hugged some more. She was pleased to hear me speak some Russian and I was surprised to hear her speak English. In many ways she has not changed at all. She still is the outwardly happy, bubbly young girl that we met so many years ago. She works, lives on her own and seems to be surviving. Her daughter is now 11 years old and because of family issues she is in a custody fight with her mother-in-law. She told us that she had used drugs for 3-4 years but now she is drug free. We asked if we could help her in any way and she declined, saying she is doing well.

The same awkwardness in the relationship is still there. We were her momma and papa, but we are not. How do we relate to one another? Life marches on, things change, relationships change and sometimes life is just not easy.

We will always love this young woman. We still struggle with anger over the injustice that separated us. We wish that things could have been different. We ask God, "WHY?" There are no answers. Just questions.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13568420.post-75799744501303129682012-02-02T00:57:00.000+04:002012-02-02T01:01:51.570+04:00Meet My Friend Sasha

Sasha is twenty six years old. He entered the Center for Social Rehabilitation (a homeless shelter) nine months ago. Some of the church brothers found him in a hospital where he had been taken because he was half dead and his feet were frostbitten and decaying. The hospital amputated all 5 toes on one foot and several others on the other foot. Sasha was homeless and addicted to drugs and alcohol. The center offered him a place to stay, care for his feet and hope for change.

I remember the first time we met. Sasha, like many young guys from the street was a bit of a wise guy. They often have the idea that they are smarter than other people, and he certainly had that attitude. I wondered if he would continue in rehabilitation. Surprisingly, every week when we came to teach, Sasha was still there. He sat in a chair, his feet wrapped in bloody bandages. He couldn't stand or walk on his own. I often wondered what it must be like to have to be helped to the open hole outhouse to "do your business" in this condition.
It was clear that Sasha was beginning to change. He was listening to the teaching and he began to participate in the worship. He now had a genuine smile instead of a wise-guy smirk.
We took them to meet the people going through rehab. At the meeting I invited anyone to give a brief testimony about what was happening in their lives, to the American team. I was surprised when Sasha got up and began to speak. He told how as a teen his father had tried to kill him by hitting him in the head with an axe! Sasha still carries the scars from that attack. He has a large dent in the right side of his head, a smaller dent in the left side and small scars all over his head. He believes that God saved his life in that attack. His neck is also deeply scarred because his father also tried to slit his throat. He told about living on the street for years and finally coming to the rehab center and finding a home. He said that coming to the center saved his life. During his testimony he began to weep loudly. It was a powerful moment, and we could see the Holy Spirit touch him.

From that day forward we watched him really begin to grow spiritually week by week.
Over the Christmas holidays I was speaking with Sasha and asking him how he was. He causally said, "my sister died this week, she was the last person in my family, I am the only one now living." I was shocked and saddened. What can you say? He had just lost the only living relative that he had. She was an addict and had died from a drug overdose.
Sasha said, "I was afraid I would be angry, and turn away from the Lord, but I realized that He could use this in my life if I would allow it. I decided to not be bitter and angry but rather to continue to follow the Lord and ask Him to change me and help me to follow Him." Wow, that is maturity. This young man was making some solid decisions to be a disciple despite the loss in his life. I was so proud of him at that moment.

Shasha has a desire to continue to follow Christ and grow in his Christian life. he desires to serve people and be in ministry. Before the teaching tonight we sat for about ten minutes as I tried to answer his questions. He was talking about growing in Christ, and how do you know if you are filled with the Holy Spirit. He just had this huge smile on his face the whole time we talked. This week he became an assisting leader at the homeless shelter. He is responsible to help oversee things, help others in their walk and tonight he led the opening of the meeting before I taught. He has a real servant's heart and he loves people.

After the meeting we spoke again for a few minutes. I am encouraging Sasha to continue serving people, and to study the Word of God and to not be afraid to begin teaching. I told him that my desire for him was to grow in his leadership gifts and to dream of taking a team and starting a church in another city in a couple of years.

I love what we do here. Every week these guys tell us how wonderful we are to come and teach them. They treat us as if we are some super-people from America. I try and tell them what a privilege it is for us that we can call them our friends. We get so much from them! We are better people because of them! When Jesus tells us to open our eyes and see the ripe harvest He is telling us to see the Sashas of the world, the broken and destroyed people, the people without hope, the addicted, the poor, the helpless. These are our brothers and sisters. They are the harvest that so often the church misses. They are the future of the church. What a blessing it is for us to be here working alongside these brothers and sisters and having them call us their friends.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13568420.post-29586598617491556422012-01-30T15:25:00.000+04:002012-01-30T15:26:35.974+04:00News From RussiaFebruary 2012 NewsletterUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13568420.post-81331918215961429732012-01-15T18:37:00.001+04:002012-01-15T18:41:03.854+04:00Our Latest NewsletterJan 2012

We are enjoying spending time with family and friends. It has been ajoy to see eight of our nine grandchildren. Soon we will also see our ninth as all of our children and grandchildren with be with us to celebrate Thanksgiving.

The New England weather has been glorious since we arrived. The temperatures are in the low 40s at night and mid 60s during the day. Even so late in the season the fall foliage and colors are beautiful. New England is such a great part of the country.

Tomorrow we drive north to Breton Woods New Hampshire. We will be attending the Northeast District conference of Foursquare churches. We are looking forward to this time with co-workers in the Gospel. On Sunday we will be speaking at Harvest Christian Fellowship, in Berlin New Hampshire.

Time is moving quickly. In just three weeks we will be back in Russia among our many friends once again.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13568420.post-21614224361186608682011-11-05T10:18:00.001+04:002011-11-05T10:19:16.337+04:00Our Latest Newsletter - November 2011November 2011 Newsletter

During those days we preached or taught 14 times, usually ministering 10-12 hours each day. We had the joy of teaching a group of 60 young men and women who are training to plant churches across Russia. We saw 15 people pray public prayers of repentance, and we prayed for healing for many people and counseled others.
During the last session of Bible school men and women began to weep while listening to a message of forgiveness and healing from anger and bitterness. The Spirit of God has been powerfully in evidence during this time. We take no credit for this. It is the Spirit of God who is doing the work here.

After our last teaching session at the Novosibirsk Bible School we made a 6 hour trip by car to the city of Acino in the Tomsk region of Siberia. That evening we attended a gathering of Russian missionaries and leaders. We were also part of a small contingent of international missionaries in attendance, including one from Norway and one from Cameroon.
On Sunday, Oct 23, Michael preached at the Acino Cornerstone church. This congregation was celebrating their tenth anniversary. The church is not large. There were about 60 people in attendance this day. When Michael called for those who would make a decision to publicly follow Christ ten people responded. It was a wonderful sight.
Later in the day we went to the local rehabilitation center to minister. Before the teaching we had a time of singing and worship and the Holy Spirit moved in a powerful way. There was a call to pray for anyone who might have aids, hepatitis, or cirrhosis. All sixteen of the men who were present came forward for prayer and we prayed for each one. The teaching time was powerful as well. The Gospel message was given and you could see that these men were beginning to grasp the simple power of the Gospel.
From Acino we traveled 5 hours by car to the city of Kolpashovo. We ministered for 2.5 days in Kolpashovo, preaching at the church two times and at the local drug rehabilitation one time. We also visited several homes and prayed with the families. During our time in Kolpashovo we saw four people publicly repent and decide to follow Christ.
Last night we arrived in Tomsk, where we spent the night. In just a few hours we will leave by car for the 5 hour drive to Achinsk. We will spend the next four days in ministry in the Achinsk region. During that time we will speak in two churches and several rehab centers.
We covet your prayers as we travel and minister. Please pray that the Spirit of God ministers through us. Pray for safety as we travel the Russian roads. Also we ask that you pray for our finances. In January we will be losing one of our largest sources of funding. We will need to replace $450.00 in support per month. We trust God for this. We know that our time in Russia is not at its end. We believe that where God leads, He provides.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13568420.post-51090560810352061402011-10-21T16:02:00.002+04:002011-10-21T16:02:52.775+04:00Busy, Busy, Busy
We have been in the city of Novosibirsk for 1 week and it has been a very busy week indeed. Every day we have been teaching a group of 60 Russian missionaries. These precious brothers and sisters are members of 18 teams who will go to Russian cities and begin new churches in the spring.

We love these young people. They are true faith missionaries. They will go to their target cities, find part time work and at the same time begin evangelizing. One year from now there will be 16-18 new churches reaching Russia for the Gospel! We are privileged to be a small part of their training.
Several of them are actually far from the city and it takes two hours by car to reach them them. Yesterday we drove for one hour on a mud road, slipping and sliding our way to a rehabilitation center.
On Wednesday Karen taught at one of the centers while I was able to go to the banya with a bunch of guys. Karen received her reward later that night when we were taken to the Novosibirsk Theater and saw a beautiful ballet. It was really a wonderful experience.
Tonight and tomorrow we teach for a total of 5 hours in a local Bible school. Afterwards we will be on the road again to the Tomsk Region. In Tomsk we will speak 6 or 8 times in 5 days. We will preach in at least three churches, two rehabs and at another gathering of Russian missionaries. From Tomsk we will go to the Achinsk region and once more we will be speaking in two churches, several rehab centers and perhaps a Bible school.
It is a city of more than 2 million people. There are few churches for such a large city, perhaps 25 in total.
We are here to teach in the missionary school and preach in Cornerstone Church of Novosibirsk.

On Sunday October 16 we participated in the Sunday morning gathering where there were nearly 550 people present. The church has many young families with children. This is always delightful to see. In most Russian Protestant churches the children are brought to the front of the hall and prayed for before they are dismissed to the children’s meeting.

The church also has a really talented worship team. We enjoyed the time of song and praise very much.
Pastor Vasily Dotsenko led the service. Vasily is a former drug addict and criminal who came to Christ about 10 years ago. Today he is a powerful, but gentle leader.

It was an interesting time. The Holy Spirit moved in a quiet but powerful way. The message was very simple. The Scripture text was Luke 6:6-11. Michael asked that each of us put ourselves into this story. Each of us is like the man with the damaged hand in the story. Something in each of our lives is broken. Most of us live with shame, anger, bitterness and woundedness, however, just as Jesus met this man and made him whole, Jesus wants to meet us at our place of brokenness and He wants to restore our lives and make us whole.
As the message began to draw to a close there was a real presence of the Holy Spirit in the hall. People began to weep as they realized that Jesus was truly there to bring wholeness into their lives.

In the Scripture passage Jesus ask the man to “Stand, come here, and stretch out your hand.” When the man did so Jesus made him whole. Michael asked everyone in the hall to do the same. Stand, raise their hands and ask Jesus to heal the broken places in their lives. It was a powerful moment. The Holy Spirit was present in a very real way. People were being touched and we believe that God did a healing work in many lives.
Michael then called for those who had never publicly proclaimed Christ as Lord and Savior to come forward and do so. Nine people came publicly to repent and make a decision to simply follow Jesus. One young man was weeping openly as he gave himself over to the Lordship of Christ.

It was a wonderful, powerful, miraculous morning! Christ was glorified and people met the Risen Christ! The next day we heard many people testify to the fact that Christ touched their lives through this simple Gospel message.
